Australia, Canada and India Announce ACITI Partnership to Strengthen Technology and Innovation Cooperation

New Delhi/Ottawa/Canberra, 28 November — Australia, Canada and India have jointly announced the launch of the ACITI (Australia–Canada–India Technology and Innovation) Partnership, a trilateral cooperation framework aimed at advancing collaboration in emerging technologies, clean energy, and resilient supply chains. The initiative marks a structured attempt to streamline innovation-led coordination between the three economies at a time when global technology ecosystems are undergoing rapid transformation.

The partnership has been introduced with an emphasis on practical cooperation, including the creation of shared pathways for R&D, innovation testing, and technology deployment across borders. Officials from all three nations highlighted the need for aligned standards and interoperable systems to support long-term industry growth.

On the sidelines of the Tech Policy & Global Markets Briefing, Arya Vikas Mudgil, an independent AI consultant and entrepreneur with experience across the Indo-Pacific and North America, noted that the arrangement reflects “economic pragmatism” and a recognition that technology development cannot occur in isolation. Mr. Arya has operated ventures in Toronto, Bengaluru and Sydney, and observed that commercial collaboration among the three countries has remained steady despite political fluctuations.

According to Mr. Arya, the ACITI framework provides structured engagement for industries including AI, clean energy, digital infrastructure, and supply-chain technologies. He emphasised that harmonizing technology standards could reduce operational friction for startups and enterprises working across these geographies.

The initiative draws on complementary national strengths: Canada’s expertise in fundamental AI research and clean-tech R&D, India’s engineering scale and deployment speed, and Australia’s critical minerals and advanced manufacturing capacity. Industry observers note that aligning these capabilities could support faster development cycles, particularly for companies building products intended for multiple democratic markets.

A key focus area of the ACITI Partnership is exploring scalable models for AI adoption. While the framework does not establish unified regulations, discussions include shared ethics principles, cross-border testing environments, and safety standards that could support joint development of AI tools in sensitive sectors such as healthcare.

Looking ahead, Mr. Arya indicated that progress on two key elements will be essential in determining the partnership’s long-term impact: the establishment of joint innovation funding mechanisms and the creation of streamlined talent mobility pathways for researchers and engineers. These components, he noted, will play a decisive role in how quickly industry-level benefits materialize.

Mr. Arya also highlighted that the partnership arrives at a crucial moment in the gradual rebuilding of Canada–India relations. Recent developments—including the restart of bilateral security dialogues, the appointment of High Commissioners in both capitals, and the creation of a renewed cooperation framework—signal renewed diplomatic momentum. Furthermore, negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) are expected to resume shortly, with the potential to significantly expand bilateral trade across technology, manufacturing, energy, and services.

For businesses operating across the three regions, the ACITI Partnership establishes a new formal corridor for collaboration in high-growth sectors. Companies in AI, clean energy, digital infrastructure and advanced supply-chain technologies are expected to be among the primary beneficiaries as implementation measures roll out over the coming months.
